Deep, gorgeous color, big complex aromas, and layers of flavors are all present in this Zinfandel. Notes of boysenberry pie, black raspberry, clove, and toasted nut on the nose combine with spicy and savory flavors of ripe, wild berries, licorice, sage, and cracked pepper. The wine is smooth and supple on the palate with a juicy, bright finish.
2015 brought an early and light harvest that began on August 10, the earliest date in St. Francis’ history. The year started out very warm and dry but then cool, damp weather in May hampered fruit set. Though the result was smaller, looser clusters on the vine, the warm and consistent summer that followed produced high-quality fruit with exceptional aromatics and concentrated flavors.
Sitting low in the Russian River Valley with numerous Eucalyptus trees and wild herbs surrounding its outer edges, Bacchi Vineyard produces one of our most distinctive Zinfandels. It’s a true expression of terroir, a word that describes what different vineyard characteristics, such as climate, soil, and geography, bring to the wine. Every vintage of Zinfandel from this century-old vineyard is unforgettably unique and compelling.
The grapes undergo a five-day cold soak before fermentation to extract optimal color and aroma. After primary fermentation, the wine is pumped into French oak barrels, 20% new, where it undergoes natural malolactic fermentation, followed by 16 months of aging.
