Tasting Notes
This sophisticated wine presents a bold yet beautifully balanced expression, showcasing the depth of its mountain-grown fruit and the elegance of nuanced French oak. Aromas of black cherry and fresh plum rise from the glass, layered with warm vanilla for an inviting first impression. The palate is lifted and expressive, unfolding with vibrant raspberry, pepper, and cocoa powder, followed by rich flavors of boysenberry and black licorice. Subtle peppercorn spice adds energy and intrigue, leading into a plush mid-palate and a lingering finish marked by mocha creaminess and a touch of toffee. Despite its concentration and richness, the wine remains poised and harmonious, concluding with a refined, satisfying finish that makes it equally compelling alongside food or enjoyed on its own.
Vintage Notes
Cooler temperatures and an abundance of spring rains in 2023 pushed back the first day of harvest to the beginning of September. The later start and extra ripening time for the fruit allowed flavors and color to develop slowly for depth and concentration. Warm fall days spread harvest out past the end of October for many of the red varieties, with a final pick of Merlot delivered to the winery on November 2.
Vineyard Notes
Translated literally, tres viejos means “three old men.” At St. Francis, we use it to describe some of our exceptionally old, head-trained Zinfandel vines. Each year, Winemaker Katie Madigan chooses fruit from three distinct regions across Sonoma County for a special blend in honor of these distinctively noteworthy vines. The Russian River Valley fruit (11%) has bright, fresh acidity. The Zinfandel from Alexander Valley (31%) is fresh yet concentrated with wild berry flavors. The Sonoma Valley fruit (58%) is both dark and intensely flavored. All vines are over 60 years old and are expressive of their distinct growing regions.
Winemaker Notes
Winemaker Katie Madigan ferments each lot independently in order to allow their unique characteristics to shine. She wants this wine to showcase the heritage of Sonoma County Zinfandel. After aging for 15 months in French oak barrels, this proprietary blend is finalized with an addition of Petite Sirah, reflecting the very best of the vintage.
