Milestone Harvest Unfolds in Sonoma Valley’s Vineyards
The wait is over—harvest season has officially begun across Sonoma County and much of California wine country! Tractors are rolling at dawn, grape bins are filling fast, and the energy in the vineyards is electric. This isn’t just any harvest—it’s one for the history books.
In 2025, Sonoma Valley celebrates its 200th harvest, marking two centuries since the region’s first vines were planted at the Sonoma Mission. Paired with California Wine Month, which honors 250 years of winemaking history statewide, this season is a true milestone for wine lovers, vintners, and visitors alike. From the golden sunsets that wash over the vineyards to the aroma of freshly picked grapes in the air, harvest brings a sense of magic that only comes once a year.
A Legacy Two Centuries in the Making
Two hundred years ago, Father Altimira and Indigenous workers planted Sonoma Valley’s first vineyard near the Sonoma Mission. Those original “Mission” vines were modest in purpose—meant primarily for sacramental wine—but they laid the foundation for a region that now produces some of the world’s most celebrated wines.
Today, we honor the artistry, craftsmanship, and passion of Sonoma’s vintners, whose work from vine to bottle continues to shape this remarkable place, and at St. Francis Winery & Vineyards, we’re proud to be part of this legacy as we share the story of our own 2025 harvest as it unfolds.
St. Francis Begins Harvest in Russian River Valley
On the morning of August 26, our first pick in the Russian River Valley set the tone for an exciting season. Sauvignon Blanc from our estate Lagomarsino Vineyard led the way—crisp, bright, and bursting with flavors of honeydew melon, kiwi, and fresh apple skins. Just a few hours later, our first Zinfandel from the Buchignani Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley made its debut, rich with juicy blackberry and plum notes, hinting at a bold, delicious red to come.
The St. Francis Story: From Founder to Future
Our story began over 50 years ago when Joe Martin, a businessman turned farmer turned vintner, planted Merlot and Chardonnay in Sonoma Valley. His vision helped define the character of Sonoma wines, and his legacy still guides us today.
Carrying that torch forward is a talented team led by winemaker Katie Madigan, celebrated for her mastery of Zinfandel and bold, expressive reds. Alongside her, Chris Louton brings elegance and finesse to Sonoma’s Cabernet Sauvignon, while Jake Terrell, our Director of Vineyards, champions sustainable practices that ensure the land will thrive for generations to come.
Supporting them every step of the way are our dedicated cellar, production, and bottling crews—the hardworking hands who transform grapes into wines destined for tables near and far.
From our estate vineyards in Russian River and Sonoma Valley to our premier grower partners across Moon Mountain, Rockpile, Sonoma Mountain, Sonoma Coast, Dry Creek Valley, and Alexander Valley, we’re proud to showcase the diversity and excellence of Sonoma County.
