This velvety red wine is rich with earthy, yet silky tannins and luxurious notes of black fruit, leather, and sage. The nose is intriguing with subtle hints of roasted maze and cocoa-nib. A complex front-palate comprised of maple, blueberry, and eucalyptus lead to a texturally enchanting finish of savory spice and black cherry.
Harvest in 2016 started in the middle of August during a pattern of warm sunny days cooled by foggy mornings and breezy afternoons for most of the area. The early months of the year were very mild with little rain allowing the vines to progress steadily and uneventfully. Yields throughout the region were slightly below average but moderate weather starting in early summer gave the fruit plenty of time to develop great color and flavor, resulting in beautifully balanced wines.
This Malbec comes from our Certified Sustainable Estate Wild Oak Vineyard, located at the foot of the Mayacamas Mountains in the heart of the Sonoma Valley. Grown here the Malbec thrives in the warm afternoons and cool evenings of Sonoma, producing luscious berries with rich, spicy characteristics and deep intense color.
The grapes are gently de-stemmed before cold-soaking to extract optimal color and aroma. After primary fermentation, the wine is aged in 100% French oak barrels, 25% new, where it undergoes malolactic fermentation, followed by 15 months of aging.
