Tasting Notes
This wine is a delight for the senses. The nose is a symphony of blue fruits, with blueberry and currant being the most prominent. There are also hints of vanilla bean and jasmine florals, which add a touch of elegance. The color is dark and the body is medium, making it a perfect wine for sipping. The palate is juicy and fruit-forward, with cranberry being the most prominent note. There are also hints of cold slate minerality, which add a nice touch of complexity. The tannins are delicate and the acidity is soft, making this wine a pleasure to drink. The finish is long and salivating.
Vintage Notes
We began our 2019 harvest before dawn on August 30. After a growing season that started in winter with record rainfall, the year ended with warm, even temperatures throughout summer. With few spikes in heat over the period, our vineyards had optimal conditions to develop full-flavored fruit with remarkable color and balanced acidity. Spring rains ended in time for good fruit set. The temperate summer allowed for long hang times and consistent, even ripening. We picked the majority of our fruit in September and the weather continued to cooperate. Warm breezy days, but fortunately no rain took place in October and the last of the grapes were harvested before the end of the month.
Vineyard Notes
The Cabernet Sauvignon fruit comes from our Certified Sustainable Estate Lagomarsino Vineyard in Russian River Valley. This scenic vineyard, just south of the town of Healdsburg, ascends into the foothills providing warm, sunny days above the fog line, ideal for Cabernet Sauvignon. The long growing season of Russian River Valley allows full ripeness, but with less aggressive tannins than in warmer regions. We source the Syrah and Mourvedre from our Certified Sustainable Estate Wild Oak vineyard located at the foot of Hood Mountain. This cool climate vineyard is located on the western end of the Sonoma Valley, AVA. The gradual south-facing slope of this vineyard, provides ample sun exposure, while coastal winds and seasonal inversion layers counter the hottest days with cool nights. The rocky, volcanic soil of the vineyard develops uniquely earthly qualities as well as charismatic varietal structure.
Winemaker Notes
Three Cabernet Sauvignon lots were fermented individually and blended together before going to barrel to age for 20 months. The three lots were chosen for their unique expression of the vineyard, ranging from brightly fruit-forward wines to rich, savory lots. The Syrah and Mourvedre lots were all fermented seperately, using whole cluster techniques with the intent to elevate distinctive spicy characters from the stems to compliment the red fruit and floral characters of the varieties. The final blend was asemembled and aged for 3 months before bottling while the compositon of the final blend ends up stylistically having 8% whole cluster fermentation.
